Expediciones Sierra Norte: Mingling with The People of the Clouds

The Zapotec community in Oaxaca’s Sierra Norte suggest you learn to cook with their grandmothers, do volunteer work in their greenhouses or go with them on an outing among the clouds. Too tempting to pass up…

At first, the people living in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca numbered ten Zapotec families. They called themselves “The people of the clouds”, since fog tends to blanket the local communities: Amatlán, Benito Juárez, Cuajimoloyas, Latuvi, Llano Grande and La Nevería.

They offer a series of mutually complementary activities. Depending on the destination you choose, they go from volunteering in greenhouses and cooking with some of the local grandmothers to learn their secret recipes, to mountain biking, hiking, zip-lining or crossing a hanging bridge amidst thick fog.

The indigenous people of the zone, divided into 60 communal properties, are responsible for safe guarding nearly a million acres where they have preserved wilderness areas.
